Biography

Bishop Francis Xavier Lacoursière was the first Bishop of Rwenzori Vicariate that later transformed into Mbarara Diocese.

He was born on 26 January 1885 in Canada,  ordained a priest on 29 June 1913. He was appointed the Apostolic Vicar of Rwenzori on May 28, 1934, and ordained a Bishop on July 25, 1934. When the Vicariate became  Mbarara Diocese in 1953, he became its first Bishop.

He resigned as Bishop on April 20, 1956. He passed away on March 15, 1970, at the age of 85 and is buried in Nyamitanga Cathedral. 
Bishop Lacoursière is remembered for his missionary work in Uganda, the founding of the Daughters of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus congregation in 1937, and the invitation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel to the diocese.
