Kibona Parish-St. John the Baptist
Kibona Parish belonged to Nyamitanga Parish until 2009 when Fr. John Baptist Tibamwenda was appointed as the first resident priest. It was later inaugurated as a parish officially in 2012 by Archbishop Paul K. Bakyenga.
It is located in Birere Sub-county, Isingiro North Constituency, Isingiro District, approximately 30 Kms from Nyamitanga Cathedral.
The construction of the current church begun in 1987 and was completed in 1993 during the same year Bishop John Baptist Kakubi opened and blessed it. The parish has 9 Centres and 5 Hiikas with 9 Catholic founded primary schools and one Catholic founded secondary school- Kibona Vocational Secondary School.
Kibona Parish lies at the outskirts of Mbarara City and to quantify the closeness of Kibona Parish to the City is the famous Runyankole saying, Ekifu ky’omutiima kiraara Birere, literary meaning it is only a foolish person who can choose to sleep in Bireere a stone throw from the City centre when his destination was Mbarara.
The population benefits from the ready market in the City of their agricultural products especially bananas that are commonly grown in this area.
The Parish shares boarders with parishes of Katukuru, Nyamitanga, Kakoma and Rwenyaga.
