Patron Saint: St. Mathew
The new Parish, which comprises Katete and Kabare centres, was separated from her mother Parish of Nyamitanga. With the elevation of Katete to parish status, the Archdiocese of Mbarara officially has 44 parishes and 25 centres with resident priests. Those centres with resident priests are being prepared in view of eventually becoming parishes.
Geographical Location and Boundaries
Katete was founded as a Christian community in 1933 with a small number of Christians. Since then, it has progressively undergone changes and transformations in terms of structure and infrastructure. Katete is the fastest-growing suburb of Mbarara city, mainly as a residential area.
In 2019, it was erected as a Centre church with an increased number of Christians. Katete church started as a “Kigaango,” a place for instruction of Catechumens and Neophytes with a grass-thatched structure, but it is now amazing to look at how the place has been transformed. The brick and iron-roofed church was built in 1980.
In 1976, one of its own sons was ordained a Catholic priest, and that occasion brought a lot of joy and enthusiasm for the growth of the Church.
Schools
Because of the need for education of the children, in 1983, the Christian community founded St. Mary’s Primary School. This school has tremendously contributed to the growth of the literacy level of the people in the area.
Construction Projects
In 2016, the Christian community mobilized themselves and started building a new and big church. The church under construction has reached the wall plate.
