The Institute of the Brothers of Christian Instruction is a lay international religious institute of Pontifical rite, founded in France in the region of Brittany by two priests, Fr. Jean-Marie de la Mennais and Gabriel Deshayes, on June 6, 1819. The Brothers were founded to teach in Catholic schools to make Jesus Christ known and loved by children and youth who, at that time, had no good schools to attend.
The Society of Missionaries of Africa, also known as "The White Fathers," was founded in 1868 by Cardinal Charles Lavigerie, Archbishop of Algiers and Carthage in North Africa, with the mission to evangelize the people of Africa. This esteemed society is the oldest institute in the Mbarara Archdiocese, having pioneered the spread of the Catholic faith throughout Western Uganda.
